During the reign of Maximilian I, relations between the Holy Roman Empire and France were marked by conflict. The peace treaties of this era testify to complex processes of negotiation. The texts and their attendant circumstances shed light on emerging practices and ideas related to the establishment of norms and obligations during the period between the Middle Ages and Early Modernity.

The triumphal procession is the most spectacular staging of victory in Roman antiquity and one of the most persistent rituals of any kind. For the first time, this volume systematically explores the historical development and sociocultural meaning of the Roman triumphal procession in the Principate and late antiquity. It casts light on the ritual from a broad range of historical, philological, and archeological perspectives.
